Tacoma Neighborhoods: Central Tacoma

Here is our guide to the Central Tacoma Neighborhood.

Central Tacoma is an area located south of 6th Avenue and between the South, East and West Tacoma neighborhoods. The Central Tacoma neighborhood is known best for 6th Avenue, the main strip containing some of Tacoma’s Best restaurants, bars, shops and music venues.

This neighborhood is much more bustling and a bit more dense than other neighborhoods, with lots of commercial spaces, apartments and multifamily buildings running along 6th Avenue. As you move away from 6th Avenue you have more traditional low density neighborhoods, with more affordable single family homes than the ones just to the north of 6th Ave.

For those looking for a place to live that is both walkable, but not quite downtown vibes, Central Tacoma is a perfect choice. You can walk to coffee, food, live music and thrift shops, all within a few minutes from your home. The neighborhood includes other notable sites like the Cheney Stadium (the home of Tacoma Rainiers), Snake Lake Park, Allenmore Golf Course, Franklin Park and Delong Park.

Centered around the 6th Avenue District, Central Tacoma has a lot to offer from food and drinks to live music and nightlife. Some of Tacoma’s best food can be found on 6th avenue, and many places are open late. There are many popular vintage clothing stores, record shops, as well bakeries, donut shops and even our favorite juice shop, Gather Juice Co.

Central Tacoma has many parks, green spaces and schools for kids and adults to enjoy. Some popular parks in the area are Snake Lake Park, Franklin Park and Delong Park. Additionally, Foss High School has a small skatepark located next to Cheney Stadium, the home to Tacoma’s minor baseball team, The Tacoma Rainiers. For cyclists, we have the Scott Pierson Trail running along highway 16, which is a dedicated bike path that runs from downtown Tacoma through Central Tacoma all the way to the Narrows Bridge.
