Best Breakfast & Brunch in Tacoma: A Local's Guide

If you're moving to Tacoma, one of the best ways to start getting to know the city is through its neighborhood restaurants. Tacoma has a surprisingly good breakfast and brunch scene, with everything from tiny neighborhood cafes and old-school breakfast spots to French-inspired brunch and some seriously over-the-top biscuits.

We've written about our favorite Tacoma breakfast restaurants before, but the restaurant scene has changed quite a bit over the years. Most notably, longtime Stadium District favorite Art House Cafe closed in 2025 after 12 years in business. It was at the top of our breakfast list for years, and we'll definitely miss The Classic, the seasonal French toast and those weekend mornings spent wandering around the Stadium District waiting for a table.

Luckily, there are plenty of other great places to grab breakfast in Tacoma. Whether you're visiting for the weekend, relocating to Tacoma or already live here and just need somewhere new to try, these are some of the Tacoma breakfast and brunch spots worth putting on your list.

Three Hearts: Hilltop

One of the newer additions to Tacoma's breakfast scene, Three Hearts is part bakery, part coffee shop and part brunch spot in Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood.

This is the kind of place where you can stop in for coffee and something from the pastry case or sit down for an actual breakfast or lunch. Everything feels thoughtful without feeling overly fancy, and they have a particularly good selection of gluten-free options along with vegan choices.

If you're moving to Tacoma and exploring Hilltop, Three Hearts is also a great excuse to spend a little time in one of Tacoma's historic neighborhoods. It's located right on MLK Jr. Way, close to Wright Park, the Stadium District and downtown Tacoma.

Side Piece Kitchen: South Tacoma

Side Piece Kitchen is definitely not your standard bacon-and-eggs breakfast.

This South Tacoma brunch spot started as a small takeout operation before moving into its own brick-and-mortar restaurant, and it has developed a very loyal Tacoma following. The menu revolves around huge scratch-made biscuit sandwiches, creative brunch dishes and rotating cheesecakes.

Come hungry. Seriously.

Side Piece is one of those places that represents what we love about Tacoma's food scene. It's independently owned, a little quirky, completely unapologetic and worth every bite.

They can also sell out, so earlier is usually better.

Cooks Tavern: Proctor District

Cooks Tavern has been on our favorite Tacoma breakfast list for years, and it still deserves its spot.

Located in Tacoma's Proctor District, Cooks serves creative comfort food with a menu that changes themes throughout the year. One season might take inspiration from Jamaica while another heads to Barcelona or the Texas Hill Country.

The rotating menu keeps things interesting, but they keep breakfast favorites around too. Eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles and beignets are among the staples.

If you're relocating to Tacoma and want to explore Proctor, make a morning of it. Breakfast at Cooks puts you within walking distance of Proctor's shops, coffee, the farmers market when it's in season and plenty of beautiful North Tacoma streets to wander afterward.

Waffle Stop: Proctor District

Sometimes you don't need brunch to reinvent itself. You just want a really good waffle.

Waffle Stop started right here in Tacoma and has become a favorite for exactly that. Their menu goes well beyond a plain waffle with syrup, with both sweet and savory options and several different waffle styles.

It's casual, family-friendly and right in the heart of the Proctor District, making it another easy stop if you're spending the day getting to know North Tacoma.

If you've recently moved to Tacoma, this is one of those places that quickly becomes an easy weekend breakfast standby.

Manny's Place: Proctor District

Manny's Place is another Proctor breakfast option, but it has much more of a neighborhood diner feel.

The menu is big and hearty, with omelets, hashes, chicken-fried steak, French toast, blueberry pancakes and breakfast burritos. There are plenty of familiar breakfast options alongside dishes with a little Southwest influence.

This is a good choice when you're less interested in trendy brunch and more interested in sitting down to an actual breakfast.

Le Sel Bistro: Stadium District

For a slower, prettier brunch, head to Le Sel Bistro.

Located on St. Helens Avenue near Tacoma's Stadium District, Le Sel is a small French-inspired bistro with one of the more memorable brunch settings in Tacoma. Its patio overlooks Commencement Bay, giving you a very different experience from Tacoma's classic diners and neighborhood cafes.

This is one where we recommend planning ahead. The restaurant is small, and brunch can fill up quickly.

For someone visiting Tacoma for the first time or considering moving to Tacoma, Le Sel also gives you a great introduction to this part of the city. You're close to Stadium High School, Wright Park, the historic homes of the Stadium District and downtown Tacoma.

Tibbitts @ Fern Hill: South Tacoma

Tibbitts @ Fern Hill has also been on our list for years, but it has evolved into an even more unique Tacoma dining experience.

Chef Shawn Tibbitts operates the tiny Fern Hill restaurant as a reservation-only Indigenous fine-dining brunch experience, with food influenced by Alaska Native foodways, Pacific Northwest ingredients and what's available seasonally.

This isn't really a "let's grab breakfast" kind of place. It's something you plan for.

The restaurant has limited scheduled seatings and prepares its food around confirmed reservations, so make your reservation before heading over.

Fern Hill is also farther south than many of the Tacoma neighborhoods visitors tend to see first, which makes breakfast here a good reason to explore another part of the city.

Southern Kitchen: Hilltop

Southern Kitchen is a Tacoma institution.

Located near the corner of 6th Avenue and Sprague in the Hilltop neighborhood, Southern Kitchen has been serving scratch-made Southern food in Tacoma for decades.

Breakfast here means things like pancakes, waffles, French toast, biscuits and gravy, grits and hearty breakfast plates. Of course, this is Southern Kitchen, so breakfast isn't the only reason to come. Fried chicken, catfish, macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler and their famous lemonades are part of the experience too.

If you're new to Tacoma and trying to eat your way through some of the city's longtime local businesses, Southern Kitchen absolutely belongs on the list.

Breakfast Is One More Way to Explore Tacoma

One of our favorite things about Tacoma is that there isn't one single area where everything happens. Great local restaurants are scattered throughout the city, from Proctor and the Stadium District to Hilltop, South Tacoma and Fern Hill.

That's also something we encourage people to experience when they're considering moving to Tacoma. Spend time in different parts of the city. Walk around. Grab breakfast. Get coffee. Visit the parks and local businesses. Tacoma's neighborhoods each have their own architecture, businesses and feel, and experiencing them in person can tell you a lot more than looking at a map.

We're Tacoma real estate brokers who were born and raised here, and we help buyers from around Washington and across the country navigate moving to Tacoma and the greater Pierce County area. If you're considering relocating to Tacoma, we'd love to help you learn the city, understand the local real estate market and find a home that fits what you're looking for.
